The UN Security Council unanimously adopted a resolution Friday to exempt US peacekeepers from war crimes prosecution for a year, ending a threat to UN peacekeeping operations, including the mission in Bosnia.

The 15-member council unanimously approved the resolution afterrounds of intense talks to bridge the gap between most council members and the United States, who demanded the immunity from the International Criminal Court, which came into existence on July 1.

The agreement was reached later after Mexico, a staunch supporter of the new global tribunal, decided to support it, diplomats said.

The resolution lifted a US threat to end the world body's peacekeeping operations if it did not get sufficient protection for Americans serving in U.N. missions. The 1,500-strong U.N. police training mission in Bosnia had faced a July 15 cutoff.
