Over 75 percent of the youth in eastern Uganda will by the end of this year have access to a helpline established by the Family Planning Association of Uganda (FPAU), said the New Vision to be published on Sunday.

"The emphasis is on the juveniles between 15-25 years of age who are prone to infection," FPAU eastern regional co-ordinator Susan Taaka was quoted as saying.

She said since the service started on June 29, they have been receiving about 100 calls every day.

She said trained counselors will be on hand to call back and answer questions about HIV/AIDS and sexually transmitted disease.

"We developed this approach after realizing that most young people shy away from having face-to-face discussions about sex with adults," she said, adding that "they would prefer talking to someone on phone."

Uganda had the world's highest infection rate by early 1990s. The Nation now has an adult infection rate of 5 percent, down fromthe 8.3 percent in 1999, according to the United nations Program on HIV/AIDS report.
