Portuguese president meets with Chinese vice-premier

Portuguese President Jorge Sampaio on Saturday held talks in Lisbon with Chinese Vice-Premier Li Lanqing on Sino-Portuguese ties and other issues of common concern.

Portuguese President Jorge Sampaio on Saturday held talks in Lisbon with Chinese Vice-Premier Li Lanqing on Sino-Portuguese ties and other issues of common concern.

Li said the successful handover of Macao in December 1999 not only settled the issue left over by history, it also laid the foundation for the future development of Macao.

He said that as long as the two countries adhere to the principle of mutual respect, mutual benefit and equality, their friendly cooperation in various fields will surely have a brighterand broader future.

Sampaio agreed with Li's assessment of the bilateral ties by saying the two countries enjoy good political relations and there is great potential for further economic cooperation.

Li arrived here on Wednesday for an official visit to the southern European country.
