HK rower reaches semi-finals of World Cup regatta

Hong Kong's top female rower Yung Ka-yan qualified for the semi-finals of the women's lightweight single at the FISA World Cup Regatta in Luzem, Switzerland.

Hong Kong's top female rower Yung Ka-yan qualified for the semi-finals of the women's lightweight single at the FISA World Cup Regatta in Luzem, Switzerland.

After placing last in her heat in Friday morning, Yung rowed a superb repechage race in the afternoon to finish third, qualifyingfor the semi-finals, according to the media release issued by the Hong Kong Sports Development Board on Saturday.

Her time of eight minutes 7.91 seconds cut more than 10 secondsoff her own personal best and made her only the third Hong Kong female rower to reach the semi-finals at a World Championship or World Cup event.

Yung made an excellent start and was just in third place at thehalfway mark. During the third quarter of the race, she was challenged strongly by British sculler Helen Mangan who briefly forced her out of qualifying position. In the last 500 meters however Yung again pushed hard and re-took third place as she approached the finish line.

Yung, 18, has been only in her first season of racing as a senior.
