Luo Tianguang, Director of Consul Division of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs met New Zealand Charge d'affaires to China July 8, 2002, informing him of the relevant cases of frequent robbery of the visiting Chinese groups in New Zealand.

Luo pointed out, the lawless persons often haunted the airports, hotels and scenic spots, seeking chances for committing offences, depriving the Chinese groups of their cash and valuables with some of them even being injured. The frequent occurrences of such cases have not only seriously affected the normal intercourse between the peoples of China and New Zealand but also damaged the image of New Zealand in the world.

The Chinese side has paid great attention to it, requesting that New Zealand will take proper measures to prevent the reoccurrence of suchlike cases. The New Zealand Embassy in China expressed its apology to the Chinese groups robbed and injured in New Zealand, promising to carry China's concerns to the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and it also said, the New Zealand side has also taken a great account of the violent cases.

The New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs is now discussing the matter over with the Chinese Embassy in New Zealand and the New Zealand police are taking relevant measures for dealing with the cases.

Recently saw a number of robbery cases happen on the visiting Chinese groups in the city of Auckland in New Zealand. Last March, when a group from Heilongjiang was having meals in a local restaurant, the lawless persons broke open the tour-coach outside the restaurant, gone away with all bag and baggage.

May saw two of a Shandong economic and trade group deprived of a handbag with air-tickets and passports of all members in it except the loss of cash. June witnessed an economic and trade study group from Chongqing being robbed, suffering a heavier economic loss and the lawless even did violence to the group, causing an injury of two, and a group from Beijing was also robbed in July with dozen of members lost their air-tickets and passports.

Besides, such cases also happened every now and then to the Chinese groups of tourists, persons visiting relatives and going to study in New Zealand.

Recently, several such cases happened to Chinese delegations one after another in Auckland area. June saw one of the delegation members being robbed in Auckland area, causing rupture in left shoulder bone and grab happened again to Chinese delegation in July with over ten members lost their air-tickets and passports in Auckland area.

In view of the not good public order in Auckland area and to avoid the happening of suchlike cases for the safety and wealth of Chinese delegations it is advised that Chinese groups do not go so far as possible to Auckland for visit. In the meanwhile groups should better be on guard and alert for safety if going to other areas of New Zealand for visit.
