Two HK Schoolgirls Killed in Hotel Fire in Beijing

Victims Choi Tsz-yan, 12 and Lau Hoi-yee, 17, were of part of a 51-member student group which is participating in a 15-day Putonghua programme at Peking University.

Two Hong Kong schoolgirls were killed in a Beijing hotel fire on Saturday night.

Victims Choi Tsz-yan, 12 and Lau Hoi-yee, 17, were of part of a 51-member student group which is participating in a 15-day Putonghua programme at Peking University.

The fire broke out at 11 pm at the Catic Plaza Hotel where they were staying. The two girls were among three taken to hospital, but were pronounced dead upon arrival.

The third victim is a 12-year-old Korean identified only as Lim who did not belong to the same tour group. She is in a serious condition.

The hotel has been closed and guests have been moved to other hotels.

The rest of the girls in the tour group from Hong Kong will continue with their itinerary.
