The Kenya government confirmed Monday that the death toll of malaria has risen to 304 since the disease's outbreak in western parts of the country in early June.

Speaking in Nairobi when receiving malaria drugs worth 40 million shillings (about 500,000 US dollars), Minister for Public Health Sam Ongeri also said that government health institutions have treated over 200,000 patients.

The drugs were donated by The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), the National Hospital Insurance Fund, the World Health Organization, the Kenya Red Cross and MSF of Belgium.

"The latest surveillance reports show that new cases are reducing gradually. We expect this in turn to reduce the number ofdeath cases," said Ongeri.

He said all government health institutions in the affected districts are under firm instructions to waive all charges for malaria cases.

"This ministry is collaborating with other stakeholders in the health sector to provide treated mosquito nets to the most vulnerable segments of the population including pregnant mothers and those with children below five years," he stressed.

A new malaria management guideline will soon be released, he added.
