Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates has agreed to become a special goodwill ambassador for Tanzania to convince other world's top companies to invest in the country, local newspaper Daily News reported on Tuesday.

Director of Investment Promotion of Tanzania Investment Center Emmanuel ole Naiko said Bill Gates, the world's richest man, is among a select group of senior chief executives who were asked by Tanzanian President Benjamin Mkapa to become special ambassadors of the country.

"Mr. Gates has agreed to become a councilor for Tanzania. His role will be to help promote Tanzania abroad and persuade top companies to invest in the country," ole Naiko said.

He said that this 46-year-old billionaire was one of the CEOs of leading companies who were invited to the formal launch of the Tanzania Investor Roundtable that will open in Dar es Salaam on Wednesday.

The investor's roundtable is an initiative supported by both the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund that seeks to increase investments in targeted sectors by involving local and international business leaders in creating investment and trade policy.

World Bank President James Wolfensohn arrived in Dar es Salaam on Monday evening to join President Mkapa in the launching of the roundtable.
