The traditional friendly cooperative relations between China and Russia will turn closer thanks to concerted efforts made by both sides, Chinese Vice-Premier Li Lanqing said Tuesday in Kazan.

Li, who was on an official visit to Russia, met with Presidentof Republic of Tatarstan Mintimer Shaimiyev.

China and Russia are each other's largest neighbors and the development of the long-term, friendly and mutually beneficial relationship is in the fundamental interests of the two countries and the two peoples, Li said.

He said that the Chinese President Jiang Zemin and Russian President Vladimir Putin signed the Sino-Russian Treaty for Good-Neighborliness and Friendly Cooperation the same day one year ago.

"The two sides are making efforts for the implementation of the treaty and the bilateral cooperation in all areas are growing," he said.

The Chinese Government supported the idea proposed by Tatarstan for forming friendly relationship with a Chinese province and the concrete and effective cooperation between the two countries will inject impetus to the growth of overall bilateral ties, he said.

Shaimiyev also spoke highly of the new growth of Russian-Chinese traditional friendship scored in the new century.

He said that Tatarstan is located between Europe and Asia. With its rich resources, developed economy and a culture with mixed characteristics of both the East and the West, Tatarstan hopes to develop closer and full-round cooperation with China in economic, educational and cultural areas.

Li and Shaimiyev also met the press after their meeting.

Kazan is the first-leg of Li's tour to Russia. He will also visit Moscow and Vladivostok.
