Chinese Defense Minister Meets Russian Security Council Secretary

Chinese Defense Minister Chi Haotian met with the Russian Security Council Secretary Vladimir Rushailo in Beijing Tuesday afternoon.

Chinese Defense Minister Chi Haotian met with the Russian Security Council Secretary Vladimir Rushailo in Beijing Tuesday afternoon.

Chi, also vice-chairman of the Central Military Commission and a state councilor, said that the first anniversary of the signing of the Sino-Russian Good-Neighborly Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation was grandly celebrated today as it was worthwhile due to its historical significance.

Referring to the treaty signed by Chinese President Jiang Zeminand Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chi described it as a milestone in the development of strategic partnership of cooperation between the two countries.

Chi pointed out that as the largest adjoining countries in the world, China and Russia should maintain and develop a stable, long-term strategic partnership of cooperation. This will be not only in the interest of the people of both countries, but also help keep peace and stability in the Asia Pacific region and throughoutthe world.

He said China gave Russia priority when cooperating in the field of international security. He said the Chinese side is satisfied with the current state of bilateral relations in the military field and in matters concerning security.

Chi said Rushailo's visit to China will help strengthen bilateral cooperation and exchanges in the field of security.

Rushailo said the people of the two countries share a long tradition of friendship. He said he was glad to see that both sides were putting into practice the agreement signed by the leaders of the two countries. He was willing to further expand bilateral cooperation in such areas as security.

Rushailo arrived in Beijing for a five-day visit to China Tuesday at the invitation of the Chinese Minister of Foreign Affairs Tang Jiaxuan.
