A Chinese chemical management center will provide emergency response services to ten international manufacturers of chemicals in order to improve the level of chemical safety in China, according to a protocol signed Monday in Beijing.

The National Registration Center for Chemicals (NRCC) will open a 24-hour hotline for the client companies and will respond to emergency chemical accidents as well as provide information and expert assistance.

China is confronted with an increasing danger of chemical accidents as it becomes the world's major producer of chemical products and both domestic and overseas chemical manufacturers spring up across the country, according to the State Administration of Work Safety.

The NRCC's clients, including Akzo Nobel, Bayer and Du Pont, which all have opened plants in China, are members of the Association of International Chemical Manufacturers (AICM), a HongKong-based organization for major international chemical companies.

The NRCC and the AICM have also agreed to set up an emergency response system in China to ensure safe and clean practices in themanufacture, distribution and use of dangerous chemicals.
