The diplomatic "Quartet" onthe Middle East peace process met at its senior level in New York on Tuesday.

UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan attended the closed-door meeting, along with other major mediators, at Manhattan's Waldorf Astoria Hotel.

US Secretary of State Colin Powell, Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov and the European Union Commissioner dealing with foreign policy, Javier Solana, attended the meeting amid intensified Middle East conflict.
