China and Russia, with wide-ranging common interests in security, should maintain constant contact and consultations in this regard.

Chinese Vice-Premier Qian Qichen made the remarks in Beijing onWednesday morning at a meeting with visiting Russian Security Council Secretary Vladimir Rushailo.

During the meeting, the two sides discussed the issue of anti-terrorism and their cooperation in the field of security.

Qian said China held that the Shanghai Cooperation Organization(SCO) and the Commonwealth of Independent States should strengthencooperation in anti-terrorism.

He said the Sino-Russian strategic partnership for cooperation had progressed smoothly in the past few years with wider cooperation.

After the September 11 terrorist attacks on the United States, more and more countries were concerned about security and the connotations of security had grown, said Qian.

He stressed that the security issue could not be solved by any country alone and demanded international cooperation.

Echoing Qian, Rushailo said both Russia and China were victims of terrorism and both faced the challenge of anti-terrorism.

The two countries had understood and supported each other and actively cooperated in this field, he said. Russia hoped while strengthening their consultations and cooperation with the United Nations, the two sides could further boost such cooperation and the SCO would play a special role.

Qian said the less tense current international situation was conducive to safeguarding world peace and stability. However, people were still worried about some regional hot spots.

China held that these problems should be resolved or eased in line with the UN Charter and international guidelines, stressed Qian.

Rushailo said Russia supported international cooperation in anti-terrorism and held that anti-terrorism measures should be carried out in accordance with international guidelines and UN approval.
