Russia to Launch Large-scale Exercise to Thwart Caspian Terrorists

Russian Defense Minister Sergei Ivanovannounced Wednesday that Russia will conduct large-scale military exercises on the Caspian Sea to counter possible terrorist operations.

Russian Defense Minister Sergei Ivanovannounced Wednesday that Russia will conduct large-scale military exercises on the Caspian Sea to counter possible terrorist operations.

The drills, scheduled for August 8-15, will involve every military structure within the Russian military for the first time in Russian history, Ivanov told Russian journalists in the Norwegian capital of Oslo, where he is making an official visit, the Interfax news agency reported.

In addition to army units, railroad troops, the Federal Border Service, the Emergencies Ministry, the Federal Security Service, the interior troops, and units of the Transportation Ministry willalso take part in the exercises, which are designed to thwart clandestine sea attacks by terrorists.

About 60 warships will also be cruising off shore prepared o lend their weight in the exercises to fend off sea-going terrorists. The flagship of the Caspian flotilla will give the command to start the exercises.

Representatives of all Caspian states have been invited to observe the flotilla's maneuvers, Ivanov said.
