Thailand will require 130 new commercial planes worth 17.5 billion US dollars over the next two decades to meet market demand, a Boeing executive said.

James Haas, regional sales director for Boeing, the world's leading plane maker, was quoted by Thursday's The Bangkok Post newspaper as saying that nearly half of the aircraft needed will be twin aisle planes such as the Boeing 777, and one-fourth will be Boeing 747.

Airlines in Thailand now operate a total of 103 aircraft. THAI,the national carrier, is working on its fleet expansion plan and expected to reveal details within next few months.

Haas said THAI will need a large number of new planes to support growing demand for flights between Bangkok and destinations in Asia, Europe and America.

According to Boeing, passenger air traffic growth in Asia has already returned to the pre-Sept. 11 level. Currently, Asia leads the world in passenger traffic growth at 6.4 percent per year.
