The United Nations has canceled a photo exhibition featuring victims of atomic bombs that was scheduled to be displayed at its New York headquarters in September, according to the Japanese organizer.

The Japan Confederation of A-Bomb and H-Bomb Sufferers Organizations (Hidankyo) was informed of the cancellation Thursday in an e-mail in which a U.N. representative said the exhibition had not been approved.

According to the e-mail, the reasons for the cancellation will be explained in a further communication by the weekend, Hidankyo officials said.

About 100 items, including photographs of victims, some with extensive burns, were scheduled to be displayed from Sept. 8 to Oct. 27 at the lobby of the U.N. headquarters, the officials said.

However, the officials said U.N. coordinators told them in May that some of the photos were too upsetting for children to view.

The officials said they sent an e-mail to the United Nations on Wednesday to inquire about the exhibition.
