China, Russia Should Expand Cooperation in a Wide Range of Areas: Jiang

Chinese President Jiang Zemin said Thursday that China and Russia should expand cooperation in a wide range of areas under the spirit of the Good-Neighborly Treatyof Friendship and Cooperation signed between the two countries last year.

Chinese President Jiang Zemin said Thursday that China and Russia should expand cooperation in a wide range of areas under the spirit of the Good-Neighborly Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation signed between the two countries last year.

Jiang made the remarks during a meeting with Vladimir Rushailo, secretary of the Russian Security Council. Jiang and Russian President Vladimir Putin Wednesday exchanged congratulations on the first anniversary of the treaty.

The treaty attracted much international attention after it was signed, demonstrating the signing of the document fitted in with the general trend of the time and the common desire of people across the world to have stability, peace and development, Jiang said.

Over the past year, China and Russia have both implemented the treaty in an earnest way, and this shows the treaty is in the long-term strategic interests of both countries and the common wish of the people in the two countries, Jiang said.

Rushailo conveyed President Putin's greetings to Jiang. He said President Putin and the Russian government pay high tribute to President Jiang's efforts in pushing forward bilateral relations and maintaining peace and stability in the region and the world asa whole.

He said it is always a strategic goal of Russia to maintain and develop its good-neighborly relations with China.

He told Jiang that the Russian side is making preparations for President Putin's visit to China at the end of the year, and believes the visit will push forward bilateral relations.

Jiang asked Rushailo to convey his greetings to Putin. He said he is expecting to meet Putin again and to work with him to increase the growth of bilateral relations

September 12, 1999, in Auckland, New Zealand, President Jiang Zemin met with Russian Prime Minister Putin on the sidelines of the Informal Leadership meeting of APEC. Putin expressed the willingness to expand economic cooperation and trade between the two countries and reiterated Russia's consistent one-China stand on the Taiwan question.

March 2-4, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Ilya Klebanov visited China and explored with State Councilor Wu Yi the possibilities of bilateral cooperation in various specific areas. The two sides signed the Summery of Talks Between State Councilor Wu Yi of the People's Republic of China and Deputy Prime Minister Ilya Klebanov of the Russian Federation. President Jiang Zemin and Premier Zhu Rongji met separately with the Russian Deputy Prime Minister.
