Anhui Province, in east China, is to launch its first export processing zone in the port city of Wuhu with the approval of the central government, local customs officers say.

The processing zone will be located in the Wuhu Economic and Technological Development Zone.

The Hefei Customs department is drawing up policies for the export processing zone.

Such zones in China are exempt from tariffs and goods produced in the zones are also exempt from value-added tax.

Wuhu used to be one of China's four biggest rice trading centers and one of the important ports open to overseas cargo ships along the Yangtze River.
