China vs Russia in Federation Cup Tie in Beijing

In a contest for a World Group berth at the Federation Cup, China are to play Russia in a play-off match at the Beijing International Tennis Center on Saturday without their countries' leading stars Anna Kournikova and Li Na.

In a contest for a World Group berth at the Federation Cup, China are to play Russia in a play-off match at the Beijing International Tennis Center on Saturday without their countries' leading stars Anna Kournikova and Li Na.

Kournikova, who suffered an ankle injury last year, was reported yet unfit to play.

Li, who has been abscent from training for two months due to health reasons, might be fielded, however, on Sunday.

According to the draw, Chinese Zheng Jie, ranked 240th in the world, faces number 21st Tatiana Panova, Sun Tiantian of China plays 15th-ranked Elena Dementieva, in the singles while Chinese duet Zheng Jie/Yan Zi meet Elena Dementieva/Elena Bovina in the doubles.

After four singles and one doubles matches, the winners of the China-Russia tie will enter the World Group while the losers will compete in the Asia-Pacific zone qualifying round.
