Gas Explosion Kills at Least Seven in North China

Seven people have been confirmed dead after a gas explosion rocked a coal mine in north China's Shanxi Province Monday, official sources said.

Seven people have been confirmed dead after a gas explosion rocked a coal mine in north China's Shanxi Province Monday, official sources said.

A total of 14 miners were working underground when the explosion occurred at 9 pm at the mine in Yangquan City, said Liu Dezheng, an official with the provincial authority for coal mine safety.

Two injured people in the explosion have been rushed to hospital, while the search for the remaining five is still going on.

The mine started production in the early 1980s. It has an annual capacity of 600,000 tons, Liu said.

Provincial and city officials rushed to the site to coordinatethe rescue work shortly after the accident.

All the locally-run coal mines in the city had been closed for safety check as on Tuesday.
