10 Peacekeepers Among 60 Victims Died in Uganda Bus Crash

At least 60 people, including 10 foreign peacekeepers, were killed Thursday afternoon when a passenger bus collided with a fuel tanker in western Uganda, police said.

At least 60 people, including 10 foreign peacekeepers, were killed Thursday afternoon when a passenger bus collided with a fuel tanker in western Uganda, police said.

Bushenyi district police commander Okello Makmot said that according to reports from a border post on the frontier with the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), 10 foreign peacekeepers boarded the bus that was later struck by the fuel tanker.

A United Nations mission is deployed in the DRC made up of military observers and unarmed troops from several countries.

The accident occurred at Lutoto, over 300 km southwest of Kampala, after the brakes of the fuel tanker traveling form Kasese failed and crashed with the bus and exploded.

"There were no survivors from the bus," said Uganda police spokesman Asuman Mugenyi.

Road accidents are common on the roads in Uganda, mostly due tothe poor mechanical condition of vehicles.

Police said there were about 15,000 accidents last year in Uganda and slightly over 1,500 people were killed in the accidents.
