Military repression cannot conquera people's will, violence can only serve as a plague on peace, occupation cannot buy security, and killing will only deepen rancor, People's Daily said Friday while commenting on a recent series of suicide bombings in Israel.

As the international community prepares to mediate the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, a series of violent incidents has raised a frightening portent for the Middle East peace process, said the newspaper.

Two suicide bombers killed themselves Wednesday night near the old central bus station in the southern Israeli city of Tel Aviv. At least five people were killed and 40 others injured. Two of the victims were foreign workers, including one Chinese. Another bombing attack Tuesday near Qalqilya in the West Bank killed seven Israelis.

The Palestinian National Authority (PNA) and the international community denounced the bombings, urged an immediate cessation of violence and an attempt to reinvigorate the stalled Palestinian-Israeli peace process, said the newspaper.

The ongoing clashes, the unrelenting violence, the bloodshed, the murder and injury of individuals inflicts tremendous suffering on both Israeli and Palestinian.

Since the new round of clashes, triggered in September 2000, dozens of innocent people have been harmed, and their fate casts a cloud over the mirage of Mideast peace. The bloody lessons should stir the conscience of all, and the cost of human life should shape the thoughts of those who must decide the course of history, said the paper.

After experiencing the bitter vicissitudes and trials for years, the land, stained with blood and tears, is still filled with sorrow. The right of survival for all nations is at stake; it is hoped by all that peace will come like a breath of fresh air and blow away the age-old anger and violence.
