The European Commission (EC), the executive body of the European Union (EU), proposed a new scheme on Friday to monitor and safeguard forests, which cover more than a third of the EU area.

The scheme, called "Forest Focus," aims to offer better protection for forests and enhance awareness of the importance offorests to the European environment.

The program is planned to run six years, from January 1, 2003 to December 31, 2008, with an annual budget of 13 million euro (about 13 million US dollars), the EC said.

Until now, EU's monitoring on forests has been limited to the impact of air pollution and forest fires. Forest Focus would develop new activities to assess the impact of climate change on forest ecosystems and to complement EU policies on bio-diversity, carbon sequestration and soil protection, the EC said.
