All counties in western China will have access to at least one highway by the end of this year, China's Communications Minister Huang Zhendong said.

This is part of China's effort to speed up the economic growth of western China, Huang said at a meeting held recently in Guiyang, capital of southwest China's Guizhou Province.

Under the government plan, 251 highway projects covering 25,766km will be built in western China this year at a cost of 34.6 billion yuan.

By the end of June, work on all listed projects had been started, at a combined cost of 13.2 billion yuan.

Western China comprises 12 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities, which lack funds for building roads.
