China Beats US in World Volleyball Grand Prix

China upset the title-holders United States in straight sets of 3-0 in the second preliminaries of the World Grand Prix women's volleyball tournament Friday in Nakhon Ratchasima of Thailand.

China upset the title-holders United States in straight sets of 3-0 in the second preliminaries of the World Grand Prix women's volleyball tournament Friday in Nakhon Ratchasima of Thailand.

The Asian powerhouse China dominated the pace and held off the Americans 22-25, 17-25, 18-25. China also had defeated the United States in straight sets in their first round-robin preliminaries in China last week.

The Chinese onslaught was led by hard-hitting Zhou Ruirui and Yang Hao who punctured the American defense with sharp spikes.

Cuba, China, the United States and Thailand are competing in Pool D. The teams meet again for the third preliminaries July 26-28 in Macao and Mial Li, Taiwan province of China.

Eight teams included China, Brazil, Japan, Russia, Cuba, the United States, Germany and Thailand are competing in three round-robin preliminaries of the 10th World Grand Prix.

The grand finals will take place Aug. 1-4 in Hong Kong among the top three teams after the completion of the three preliminaries plus hosts China competing in a single round-robin format.
