Spain Defeated China in Volleyball GP to Advance Into the Final

Spain defeated host China 3-2 in a thrilling marathon match that lasted over two hours in the forth round of the 2002 World Men's Volleyball League on Saturday.

Spain defeated host China 3-2 in a thrilling marathon match that lasted over two hours in the forth round of the 2002 World Men's Volleyball League on Saturday.

With Saturday's victor, Spain, who hold an unbroken record in the Pool B, has advanced into the final round of the League with three Pool matches left.

China, who beat former league champion Italy last Sunday, started well and took the initiative in the first set. But then Spain turned up the heat with firm blocks and won the first set 29-27.

It took the host an fantastic effort by enforcing severing and spiking while Spain slipped into a string of errors. China took the following two sets 25-17 and 25-18.

In the forth, Spain seized the winning momentum to pull back to2-2. Spain continued with good services and spiking in the wining set while China failed to convert three match points. Spain capitalized the series of unforced errors by China and finally wonthe set 18-16.

Di Anhe, head coach of China, said it was abnormal for China tolost with three match points in hand. "We have chances, but my players are too young and failed to catch the chances. We have toomany unforced errors."

"We could not lost the confidence although in this situation. We developed match after match." said Di.

Spain's head coach Francisco Hervas gave high evaluations to his players and said, "This is a hard, tough and tension match. China did much better than us some time, but we wait and wait until the last set."

"We are lucky, but luck is a part of the match, not a whole match. Salvador Juan Jose could not play today, but the rest of the team did his job. We won based on our strength." said Hervas.

China will challenge Spain on Sunday again as the second clash of forth round.
