Bilateral ties between China and Russia are developing smoothly and that encourages broad prospects for cooperation between the two countries' local regions, Chinese Vice Premier Li Lanqing said Saturday in Vladivostok.

Li, who is on an official visit to Russia, made the remark whenhe met with Sergei Darkin, governor of Russia's Primorye Region.

The Primorye Region and northeast China, with favorable geographical and human conditions and joined by common mountains and rivers, have great potential for cooperation in economy, culture, education, health, sports and tourism, said the Chinese vice premier.

During his visit, Li said that he and his Russian counterpart Valentina Matviyenko had arrived at a common view on supporting mutually beneficial cooperation between regions of the two countries, while promoting cooperation at the national level.

He expressed hope that the Primorye Region would serve as a forerunner in developing regional cooperation with China and contribute to the lasting friendship between the two nations.

Darkin extended a warm welcome to Vice Premier Li on his visitto Vladivostok. The visit, he said, is an indication that the Chinese government has attached great importance to its contact and cooperation with Russia's Primorye Region.

Noting that Russia and China have such long-lasting ties, he said the Good-Neighborly Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation between the two countries signed one year ago provided a clear orientation for the development of bilateral ties in the new century.

Darkin hailed the success of the third session of the Russia-China Cooperation Committee of Education, Health, Culture and Sports. He said the Primorye Region is ready to cooperate with China in these fields, and that should enhance and enrich existing bilateral ties, he added.

On Saturday, Vice-Premier Li also visited the Far Eastern State University and its Chinese-language Teaching Center.
