More than 80,000 residents in a settlement in the planned new capital Dodoma faced a high risk of contracting water borne diseases, including cholera, due to persistent water shortage, local newspaper Observer reported onSunday.

A survey by Observer revealed that the situation has been made worse due to the poor drainage system and lack of garbage collection facilities in the Chang'ombe squatter settlement, an outskirts of Dodoma Municipality.

The settlement, which began to build in 1976, has only one water tap for 6,000 houses at present time. The settlement also lacks other social services, including schools, health centers andpolice posts.

Local government official Adam Kishoka was quoted as saying that most residents moved into Dodoma following the governmental plan, but they were not provided enough building plots.

Dodoma, the new capital in schedule for the Tanzanian government, was started to build in 1973 under the Capital Development Project.

The project, planned to be finished in ten years, was only accomplished 15 percent now.
