The People's Daily on Monday hailed the establishment of diplomatic relations between the People's Republic of China and the Republic of Nauru as a milestone in the history of bilateral ties.

China and Nauru signed a joint communique in Hong Kong on Sunday on the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries.

The establishment of diplomatic ties in conformity with the interests and common desires of the two peoples is a matter that deserves celebrating, said the People's Daily in an editorial.

It is a natural outcome of the development of traditional friendship and good relations of the two peoples, said the paper.

Nauru is a country committed to non-aligned policy and to developing good relations with all other countries. The strengthening of friendly exchanges and the enhancement of mutual understanding between the two peoples in the past years have finally led to mutual recognition and the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries, said the paper.

In the joint communique, China pledged support for Nauru's efforts to safeguard its national independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity and to develop its national economy. Nauru recognized that there is but one China in the world, that the government of the People's Republic of China is the sole legal government representing the whole of China and that Taiwan is an inalienable part of Chinese territory.

Nauru decided to sever its "diplomatic relations" with Taiwan as of July 21, 2002 and pledged that after the establishment of diplomatic relations, Nauru should not have official relations of any form with Taiwan. China appreciates Nauru's stance on this issue, the paper said.

It said the establishment of diplomatic relations once again manifests the vitality of the five principles of peaceful coexistence. Both countries have agreed to further develop good relations on the basis of the five principles, namely the principles of mutual respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, mutual non-aggression, non-interference in each other's internal affairs, equality and mutual benefit, and peaceful coexistence.

China, as one of the major advocates of the five principles, has been pursuing an independent foreign policy of peace, said the paper. More and more countries have come to accept the five principles since its birth almost 50 years ago. To handle state-to-state relations with the guidance of the five principles is conducive both to the establishment of a new international political and economic order and the maintenance of world peace and stability, the paper said.

Nauru, with a population of about 10,000 with an area of 24 square kilometers, was previously a UN territory administered by Australia, New Zealand and Britain. It became independent in 1968 and became a member of the United Nations in 1999.
