Kaunda Says Chiluba May Be Pardoned

Zambia's first republican president Kenneth Kaunda said Monday that immediate past president Fredrick Chiluba may be pardoned if he agrees to bring back the wealth he allegedly plundered from the country.

Making reference to the utterances made by President Levy Mwanawasa Sunday, Kaunda said at a press briefing that the truth of what happened to the country's wealth must however be established before the country can consider pardoning the former head of state.

Mwanawasa on Sunday alluded to the fact that he may consider using his presidential prerogative by pardoning Chiluba once he agrees to return the wealth he is alleged to have plundered from the country.

Kaunda said he had confidence that Mwanawasa would lead the country out of the difficulties it is currently facing, as he was a man of integrity.

He said the decisions the president had so far made showed thathe could do things constitutionally and help in the development ofZambia.

Kaunda also said experts were free to go and inspect the ZambiaTrans-Regional Office of the President (ZAMTROP) account, which had been utilized when he was president.

The ZAMTROP account is a discredited account based in London, which was used by the country's intelligence services to fund operations abroad.

Kaunda also maintained he had no hatred towards the man who succeeded him as head of state of the country, adding that Chilubawas the one who abused Kaunda's offer of advice to him.

On Tuesday, Zambia's parliament resolved to lift Chiluba's immunity to allow for his investigations and prosecution if found wanting by the courts of law.

Zambians from all walks of life have demanded the arrest of Chiluba after President Mwanawasa accused his predecessor of serious corruption during his ten years in office.
