Russia's WTO Entry Process Moving Fast: Official

Supachai Panitchpakdi, the WTO's director-general designate, indicated that the World Trade Organization is moving faster to admit Russia as the 146th member,the Bangkok Post reported Tuesday.

Supachai Panitchpakdi, the WTO's director-general designate, indicated that the World Trade Organization is moving faster to admit Russia as the 146th member,the Bangkok Post reported Tuesday.

Speaking at a seminar held by the Marketing Association of Thailand, Supachai, who will take office in September, said Russiawould be approved by other WTO members soon in expectation that the country could participate in the next ministerial meeting, due to be held in Mexico next March.

Although Russia's economy is fragile at the moment, the countryis rich in natural resources such as oil and minerals, he said, adding that Russia's entry would benefit Thailand by improving access for Thai farm products and opening up new sources for oil.
