A House of Representatives ethics panel of Japan will hold a meeting on Wednesday for former Foreign Minister Makiko Tanaka to address allegations she misused her aides' salary in 1998.

Prior to the meeting of the lower house's Deliberative Council on Political Ethics, Tanaka, 58, submitted materials, including a letter of explanation and her secretaries' wage slips. She is expected to deny the allegations during the two-hour meeting.

The council decided to hold the meeting on July 11 after Tanaka herself officially declared to the council her intentions to present her defense on the issue.

Tanaka's decision to address the accusations came after the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) suspended her membership earlier this month on grounds that she had been uncooperative in its probe into the allegations.

The panel, which is normally closed, will be fully open to the news media for the first time after the ruling and opposition parties pushed for an open session for this case.

Whether she can provide a convincing explanation in response to the questions from the council members will be the focus of the meeting.

An outspoken and reform-minded lawmaker, Tanaka is accused of misusing the state-paid salaries for two of her secretaries in 1998.

Tanaka has denied the accusation in the letter of explanation submitted to the committee.
