'Son of Macao' Commemorated

The 160th anniversary of the birth of Zheng Guanying, a well-known Chinese thinker, was marked in various ways in Macao, where he received childhood education and spent most of his later years.

The 160th anniversary of the birth of Zheng Guanying, a well-known Chinese thinker, was marked in various ways in Macao, where he received childhood education and spent most of his later years.

Zheng wrote in Macao at an old age the Sheng Shi Wei Yan, a master piece that weighed on the Chinese society in recent history.Also as an entrepreneur, an educationalist, a literati and an altruist, he enjoys the reputation as the "Son of Macao."

Addressing a symposium attended Wednesday by hundreds of local and overseas scholars, Chief Executive Edmund Ho Hau Wah said Zheng's reform ideas remain enlightening now in an era when China is undergoing a massive reform and opening-up drive.

Zheng proposed the nation absorb advanced ideas and push forward reforms. "At that time, Zheng was an important figure witha unique vision towards the whole world," he said.

Zheng's old house has become a cultural heritage in Macao and the chief executive vowed to make efforts to protect Macao's cultural relics, promote cultural development and spur social progress.

A bronze statue of Zheng Guanying was also unveiled Wednesday. The Postal Services of Macao has started to issue a set of new stamps commemorating Zheng.
