In recent years the AIDS has shown the sign of sweeping over China. The number of AIDS victims has increased at an average growth rate of 30 to 40 percent since the first sufferer was discovered in 1985. By the end of 2001 the officially revealed figure had reached 850,000.

Currently the areas that gather more AIDS victims cover Yunnan, Xinjiang, Guangxi, Guangdong, Henan, Sichuan, Beijing, Anhui and Shanghai, among which sharing needles for drug-taking is the main reason in western regions and illegal blood collection the main reason in the middle areas.

Citing Shanghai as an example, the number of AIDS victims has been up 45.16 percent over the same period of last year. 528 HIV virus-carriers have been found and 34 dead. Of the three ways discovered in the city sex spreading turns out to be the main channel for the spread. Statistics show 80 percent females and 20 percent males are infected by their spouse, and 67 percent married and 45 percent single males, by prostitutes and sex partners.

According to common practice, the spreading of AIDS features infection and proliferation stages at the beginning. But the number of victims will accelerate once it enters the increasing stage, where it will fail to be controlled if no effective measures are taken immediately. The increasing rate of the AIDS victims has hit over 60 percent from 2001 to 2002 and the spreading of the disease has entered the increasing stage. The number will exceed 10 million by 2010, causing a great economic loss of 7.7 trillion yuan if no measure for control is adopted as soon as possible. By then China will be one of the countries that suffer most from the disease.

Therefore, for the Chinese government at all levels and the whole Chinese people there is no more time for delay to control the spreading of the AIDS.

Some foreign experts warn the AIDS are able to lead to war, slaughter and subversion. It will intensify poverty and end up with large groups of miserable orphans.

Instead of an infectious disease caused by public hygiene, the spreading of the AIDS involves complicated social factors, so it needs the attention from the whole society and the contributions from many such aspects as medicine, society, psychology, ethics, law and so on.
