Ceasefire in Sudan Epected in August

Combatants in the Sudan conflict could reach a comprehensive ceasefire in the next round of negotiations to be held in Kenya next month, the East African Standard daily reported Wednesday.

Combatants in the Sudan conflict could reach a comprehensive ceasefire in the next round of negotiations to be held in Kenya next month, the East African Standard daily reported Wednesday.

Lieutenant General Lazarus Sumbeiywo, special envoy on Sudan ofthe Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD), was quotedas saying that both the Sudanese government and the rebel Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM) had shown a great inclination towards ending the conflict.

He said that the talks would concentrate on trying to finalize key outstanding issues which were not resolved in the last round of negotiations.

"There were a few issues which remained and we are optimistic that they will be settled. These talks are moving in the right direction," Sumbeiyo said.

The Sudanese government and SPLM signed an agreement in Nairobiat the weekend, with both sides agreeing on the separation of state and religion and the right to self-determination in southernSudan, two keys issues on ending the 19-year civil war.

However, the cessation of hostilities was one of the issues left pending. Both sides agreed that the new round of talks in Kenya will have the mandate to "negotiate and implement a comprehensive cease-fire to end the suffering and killing of Sudanese people."
