China Warns of Cholera from Afghanistan

China will take actions to preventthe influx of cholera that has broken out in Afghanistan, authorities said in Beijing on Wednesday.

China will take actions to preventthe influx of cholera that has broken out in Afghanistan, authorities said in Beijing on Wednesday.

The State Administration of Quality Supervision and Quarantine issued a circular, saying that according to a World Health Organization report a diarrhea-type illness is spreading in Afghanistan.

In the past three weeks, 6,691 people were found to be infected.Three who died were diagnosed as having cholera.

Concrete actions should be taken to prevent the disease from spreading in China, the circular said.

Passengers from Afghanistan with diarrhea-like symptoms and vomiting should tell the quarantine departments when entering China. Quarantine staff should take necessary measures to treat infected patients, and those likely to be infected.

Quarantine checks on transported equipment, cargo, containers and parcels should be intensified. Sterilization is allowed if necessary. Food, fruit, vegetable and beverage are permitted to beunloaded only after inspection.

People heading for Afghanistan should consult quarantine departments and health care centers for advice on the disease situation, the circular said.
