China needs more skilled insurance personnel for the market to prosper, says Simpson Hsu, general manager of the American International Assurance Company Limited Beijing Branch (AIA).

As more foreign insurance firms entered China and the domestic insurance market flourished, there would be a higher demand for insurance personnel with expertise and appropriate, correct service attitudes, he said.

A newcomer usually needed to learn the basics for two months and pass exams to be qualified for selling insurance policies. After two to three months training in the market, he could qualifyas a life insurance consultant. After further intensive training, the insurance agent could upgrade from elementary manager to secondary manager and finally reach senior manager level.

"How to find clients and build up trust with them, and how to sell products all need continual learning. Insurance business requires a life-long study," he said.

Insurance agents should be well-versed, sincere and warm-hearted, Hsu said. Senior insurance agents can even offer financial advice to customers and be a good friend to the family.

As the first foreign life insurance company in Beijing, AIA only wanted applicants without any insurance experience, he said.

Hsu said the company was keen to train more local qualified personnel for the Chinese insurance industry. Hunting for the bestfrom other firms would undermine the whole industry as well as customers.

AIA Beijing branch has sold 1,500 policies since it opened its doors on June 7, Hsu said, and he hoped that total premiums would reach 20 million yuan (2.4 million US dollars) this year.
