Colombia police said on Wednesday they have foiled a rebel's suicide plan to crash an aircraft into government buildings.

The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) planned to steal a plane to launch an attack on the Narino presidential residence or against the seat of Congress on August 7 -- when the President-Elect, Alvaro Uribe, is scheduled to take office, GermanJaramillo, director of Colombia secret police, said at a press conference.

The FARC planned to "hire a suicide pilot to carry out the operation in this downtown Bogota zone," the police director said.

Jaramillo said that one of the main heads of FARC, Javier Carvajalino, who was captured in Bogota on Tuesday, was in charge of stealing the aircraft at the Bogota or Barranquilla airports.

Six weeks ago, the Colombian Air Force (FAC) revealed that two clandestine flights over the Colombian capital had been detected.

Air Force Commander Hector Velasco said the US Air Force will participate in security measures to prevent attacks during the president's swearing-in ceremony.

The FARC is the Colombia's largest rebel group. After a breakdown in the peace process with the government of President Andres Pastrana, the rebels intensified their attacks throughout the country.
