Albanian Prime Minister Pandeli Majko resigned from his post Thursday morning, the Albanian news agency ATA reported.

Majko told a press conference that his resignation would prevent further conflicts between factions within the ruling Socialist Party (SP).

"My political decision is also to respect fully the SP's resolution," said Majko, who was elected as the head of the government only five months ago.

Majko's predecessor, SP's Ilir Meta was required to step down five months ago, as a result of his battle with SP veteran Fatos Nano, who frequently criticized the government led by Meta. Nano is now the leader of the SP.

Under a decision passed on July 15 by the General Steering Committee of the SP, the party's chairman should be the head of the government. In this way, Majko had to resign so as to give place to Nano.

Albanian President Alfred Moisiu appointed Fatos Nano to replace Majko and asked him to form the new government as soon as possible. Moisiu took office as president of Albania on Wednesday.
