Chinese Court Opens 2.4 Billion Yuan Edible-oil Smuggling Case

A court in Guangdong province, south China, has begun hearing a massive smuggling case in which 12 suspects are accused of smuggling 820,000-odd tons of edible oil during a two-year period from June of 1996 to June of 1998, evading 2.4 billion yuan (approximately 290 million US dollars) inimport duties.

A court in Guangdong province, south China, has begun hearing a massive smuggling case in which 12 suspects are accused of smuggling 820,000-odd tons of edible oil during a two-year period from June of 1996 to June of 1998, evading 2.4 billion yuan (approximately 290 million US dollars) inimport duties.

Among those on trial at the Shenzhen municipal intermediate people's court are Liu Hao, deputy general manager of the ShenzhenMunicipal Huiwei Industrial and Trade Co., Ltd., and You Nianqiu, general manager of the Huizhou Ocean Shipping Agency.

The suspects allegedly smuggled 304 shipments (267 shipments have so far been ascertained) of bean oil, rape oil and other edible oils with the help of their collaborators from local customs and other authorities.

The court is yet to deliver its verdict.
