Philippine Tourism Secretary Richard Gordon expected more and more Chinese tourists flocking to the Philippines to partake of its many travel destinations, affordable tour packages and colorful year-round festivities.

"We must take advantage of the Chinese tourist market as it is the largest growing market in the world," Gordon said in press release Saturday.

"Our Southeast Asian neighbors have done well to attract them, and we can too," he said, adding that "China is near enough to the Philippines, making us an ideal short haul destination."

According to the Department of Tourism of the Philippines, Chinese tourist arrivals to the Philippines increased by 28.61 percent from 2000 to 2001 and 49.6 percent from January to June, 2002, over the same period last year.

In a move that could further boost tourist arrivals from China, the Philippines government had approved a visa-on-arrival policy for Chinese nationals.

Together with a large tourism industry contingent, Gordon is scheduled to travel to China in September for an all-out sales mission.
