Indonesia and China have agreed to purchase a total of one million tons of Thai rice this year, Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra said Saturday.

In his weekly radio program, "Premier Thaksin Talks with the Public," the Thai leader said that Indonesia had placed an order for 500,000 tons of Thai rice.

The rice would be delivered between November 2002 and August 2003, 50,000 tons each month, he disclosed.

Over half of the order, or 300,000 tons, will be shipped to Jakarta in the way of the normal trade system; while the rest willbe sold in the form of transaction for account, he stated.

The prime minister said that he was informed by Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Somkid Jatusripitak that China wouldalso purchase 500,000 tons of Thai rice this year.

Somkid visited China at the head of a Thai delegation last week.

"With the two orders, Thailand's exports of rice this year willbe higher than last year, which is good news for local farmers," said the Thai prime minister.
