Despite improved crop yields this year, urgent foreign food aid will be needed to help the Democratic People's Republic of Korea to feed millions of its most vulnerable citizens, a UN report said Monday.

Food aid shipments must be increased to prevent the poorest sections of the population from facing extreme hardship in the coming months, according to the report released here at the UN headquarters in New York.

The report, prepared by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization and the UN World Food Program, noted that the safety net being provided by targeted food assistance cannot be removed even with a limited harvest.

According to the report, production of winter-spring wheat, barley and potatoes this year reached 441,000 tons of cereal equivalent, 34 percent higher than the previous four years' average of 328,000 tons.

Although a 42 percent jump in overall production this year had been forecast, the country still faced an uncovered food deficit of 382,000 tons for July through October. the report said.

"The country's capacity to import commercially is limited, and aid pledges by the international community have been slow in coming this year," the report warned.
