The Lusaka magistrate court Tuesday discharged a defamation case in which President Levy Mwanawasa had sued the People Newspaper for publishing an article alleging that he had Parkinson disease.

People Newspaper editor-in-chief Emmanuel Chilekwa told the court the information provided to him was fabricated and that the sources had failed him.

Chilekwa has since apologized to Mwanawasa and the two parties have reconciled.

On May 15 this year, the People Newspaper published a story alleging the president had Parkinson disease. Chilekwa and three other colleagues were later arrested and remanded in connection with the article.

In discharging the case, Principal Magistrate Frank Tembo warned journalists in the country to report truthfully and objectively.
