Russia, US Hold Talks on Defense, Political Relations in Moscow

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Georgy Mamedov and US Under Secretary of State for Arms Control John Bolton held talks in Moscow on Tuesday to discuss defense and political relations, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

In the meeting, Mamedov and Bolton focused on preparations for the first meeting of a Russian-US consultative group on strategic stability, which is scheduled to take place in September in Washington. The meeting will cover the ratification process for the Treaty on Strategic Offensive Reduction in the Russian FederalAssembly and the US Congress.

The consultative group was set up within the framework of a joint declaration on strategic stability signed during a summit inRussia between US President George W. Bush and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in May.

Mamedov and Bolton also discussed the implementation of the understandings on defense and political issues reached at the Russian-US summit in Moscow and the G-8 summit in Canada, and other urgent issues in military and political relations between the two countries.
