Zimbabwe Ratifies Protocol over Establishment of African Parliament

The Zimbabwean parliament ratified Tuesday a protocol on legal affairs of the establishment of the Pan-African Parliament after an intense debate, a senior official said Wednesday.

The Zimbabwean parliament ratified Tuesday a protocol on legal affairs of the establishment of the Pan-African Parliament after an intense debate, a senior official said Wednesday.

The protocol would increase self-sufficiency and mobilization of resources with a view to improving the standard of life of the African people, said Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Patrick Chinamasa.

"The establishment of the Pan-African Parliament will ensure effectively the full participation of the African peoples in the economic development and integration of the continent," Chinamasa said.

"The goal and vision are to come up with common values among the people in the region," he said.

The establishment of the Pan-African Parliament was informed bya vision to provide a common platform for African people and theirgrassroots organization to be more involved in discussions and decision-making on the problems and challenges facing the continent.

Chinamasa said Zimbabwe had already made the first move in trying to solve the issue of access to resources by addressing theland issue.

The main objective of the parliament, which comes under auspices of the newly formed African Union, was to fight for economic independence for African countries.

The Zimbabwean parliament also ratified the protocol on legal affairs in the Southern African Development Community (SAC) aimed at uniting member states to cooperate in all areas necessary to foster regional development and integration.

The protocol ensured the establishment of a legal sector, whichwould support institutions to perform their functions.
