Chinese Farmers Exploit International Leather Market

Farmers in north China's Xinji City, one of the major leather trading centers in the country, have begun selling their leather products on the international market.

Farmers in north China's Xinji City, one of the major leather trading centers in the country, have begun selling their leather products on the international market.

Early this year, several of the city's leather enterprises registered China's first chamber of commerce for leather enterprises in the United States. Prior to this five Xinji leatherenterprises had teamed up to register as the Xuelu (Snow Deer) Leather Co., Ltd. in Manhattan, New York.

Statistics show Xinji had 1,073 leather enterprises at the end of 2001, employing more than 50,000 people. Their combined output was valued at 5 billion yuan (602 million US dollars). The city's export of leather products was worth 117 million US dollars last year.

Xinji has a long history in leather processing. At first, localfarmers purchased leather from other parts of the country and thendistributed their leather products for sale in other areas of China. A wide range of leather products from the early horsewhips and saddles to fur garments, handbags, wallets, boxes, shoes and straps is manufactured in the region.

The city now has 49 enterprises which have the right to export their own leather products. More than 110 enterprises export theirproducts to Russia, with the sheepskin garments made in the city accounting for 70 percent of the total leather goods sold on the Russian market.

The fur products of the Dongming Leather Co., Ltd entered Japanand the Republic of Korea last year, earning over 40 million US dollars in foreign exchange.
