The governments of Mozambique and China signed a protocol Thursday in Maputo, under which China will send a new medical team to work in Maputo in the next two years.

The team with 12 doctors is to replace the current Chinese medical team, which is ending its mission soon.

The medical team from China specializes in general surgery, obstetrics and acupuncture.

The Chinese doctors are to be distributed between Maputo Central Hospital and the Mavalane General Hospital on the outskirts of Maputo, providing assistance in their respective specialisms, but also helping train Mozambican health staff.

According to a press release from the Chinese Embassy, the document was signed by Mozambican Deputy Health Minister Aida Libombo and by Zhao Qiang, charge d'affaires of the Chinese Embassy in Maputo.

Since 1976, China has sent 12 teams of medical doctors to work in Mozambique.
