Two teenage girls were kidnapped at gunpoint Thursday afternoon in Lancaster, 70 miles (112 kilometers) northeast of Los Angeles, Los Angeles County police said.

Tamera Brooks, 16, and Jaqueline Marris, 17, were sitting in separate cars each with a male friend when a man approached them and took them away in one of the friends' car, Joe Efflandt, the spokesman of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said.

The man, described as a Hispanic in his mid-30s to early 40s, tied up one boy and sped away in the white Ford Bronco with both girls inside.

Both Brooks, a black girl, and Marris, who is white, apparentlydid not know each other and their abductor.

Police said the abductor left behind a Saturn car that was reported stolen in the state of Nevada last month.

The remote area where the kidnapping occurred is a place frequented by young people, police said.
