Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni is in northern Gulu town to assess the security situation and command operations against the Lord resistance Army (LRA) rebels, reported the semi-official newspaper Sunday Vision to be publishedon Sunday.

President Museveni on Friday evening arrived in a long, heavilyarmed military convoy in Gulu Municipality at 6:00 p.m. (1500 GMT),escorted by armored vehicles and jeeps to Gulu's Uganda People's Defense Forces (UPDF) 4th division barracks. He pitched camp in Gulu to oversee the national army's operations against the rebels.

Army spokesman Shaban Bantariza said the president is in Gulu to assess the security situation and command operations against the LRA rebels both within Uganda and those who have slipped into southern Sudan.

The president is accompanied by army commander James Kazini andChief of Military Intelligence Noble mayombo.

Bantariza said he could not tell exactly how long the presidentwould stay in the north, adding that "the president will stay in Gulu for as long as he has not yet accomplished all that has takenhim there -- security and any other state duties."

He said the president would also inspect all mechanisms put in place to protect the civilians in internally displaced persons camps.

It was recalled that Uganda launched the "Operation Iron Fist" against the LRA rebels in March in southern Sudan after the allowance from the Sudanese government. The operation flushed the LRA rebels from their bases in southern Sudan into northern Uganda.

Kony rebels have reportedly killed an estimated 90 people and burnt vehicles and houses and displaced 43,000 people in the northern districts of Gulu, Pader, Lira, Apac and Kitgum since a group of rebels crossed into Uganda from southern Sudan on June 8.

The LRA rebels abducted over 10,000 children and displaced hundreds of thousands of northern people in the past 15 years.
